This article contains a top 100 list of the best social media books.
I have created this list using six criteria:
number of Google hits (GH);
number of Amazon ratings (NA);
average Amazon rating (AA);
number of GoodReads ratings (NG);
average GoodReads rating (AG);
release date (RD).
Please refer to the bottom part of this article to find out how the calculations were performed. Believe me, creating this list cost me a huge amount of time. So I sincerely hope you will enjoy it!
Scope of this List
For this Top 100 list I have included only books that (partly) covered social media and social networks. Sometimes the scope of a book wasn’t entirely clear from its official description. In those cases I tried to rely on reader’s reviews and tags on Amazon. Only when these contained references to either social media or social networks, the books were allowed on this list.
(Note that I did not include e-books on this list. That’s because dead-tree versions look so much better in my giant book case.)
Finding the Books
In order to find all these potentially timeless classics, I started with the 24 books listed in the article Best Books on Social Media. I subsequently found many other books through the Customers-Who-Bought-This-Item-Also-Bought-cross-reference-thingy on Amazon. That’s how I finally ended up with a list of 130+ books.
(Note: in case of multiple editions of the same book, only the most recent edition is listed on the chart, though I did my best to combine ratings for all available editions.)
Doing the Calculations
When it was time to do the calculations, I checked the number of reader’s ratings on Amazon, and I ranked the books according to these results (= a measure of quantity). I also checked the average Amazon ratings, and I ranked the books according to these results (= a measure of quality). Consequently I did exactly the same with the ratings on GoodReads, checking both total number of ratings and averages.
I then checked the number of Google hits for each of the books, and I ranked them accordingly (= a measure of popularity). Last of all, I ranked the books according to their age since their first release date. (When Amazon and GoodReads reported different first release dates, I used the oldest one.) I decided to use this metric because I think newer books with X ratings should be awarded higher positions on my list than older books with the same X ratings. After all, having collected those same X ratings in a shorter time span is a better achievement.
Finally, I took the six rankings, waved a bit with my wizard’s wand, drank a lot of coffee, and re-calculated everything into a final ranking. This resulted in the list you now have before you.
(Note: I performed this little brain-damaging project in the second week of August, 2009. Current ratings might have changed since then.)
Disclaimers and Bla-de-bla
I might have missed a few great books. That’s too bad, but I had to stop browsing for more books before frying my cerebral cortex.
And I admit that the system I used has no scientific basis whatsoever. Nevertheless, I think the results are quite interesting, and I’m sure the list can be of great help if you want to broaden your knowledge of the field of social media, in all its exciting dimensions.
I suggest you start with number 1, and then slowly work you way down. It shouldn’t take you more than a couple of years…
Note: If you like this list, be sure to check out the other book lists I created earlier on my personal blog:

Thanks for the mention and the great list, Jurgen!
An intriguing list! I notice, however, that (a) Twitter, where I find an immense amount of socializing for business and networking, is represented by only 6 of the books, and that (b) Tee Morris’s ALL A TWITTER, which deals not only with Twitter itself but with social-media how-tos and pitfalls, isn’t on it. (As one might guess, I recommend this title.)
wow, a TON of work – thank you for putting this together, and thanks for including I’m on LinkedIn — Now What???

Brilliant work. Just what I needed. And to say “thanks,” I’ll absolutely share this list.
Really great work and thanks for providing this excellent list of resources!!
Friendly note: Just got a review copy of Shel Israel’s “Twitterville” and I highly suspect it will make the next list along with Brogan’s new book.
Best,
Peter
I’m glad toprankblog.com was a useful starting point for this list. This is an excellent resource!
Thanks for taking the time to put this together and thanks for including Radically Transparent in the top 20!

I agree Michael, ALL A TWITTER is a great source. Why is it not listed? According to the book’s foreward by Chris Brogan, Tee Morris lives in the future, which might also explain why the book’s copyright is printed as 2010 !! So it’s likely not an oversight, it’s just very (VERY) new on the shelves.
I think I’ll read it again, to get ahead of the crowd …
My favorite that IS listed? #9 WIKINOMICS by D.Tapscott & A.D.Williams – lots of depth in their 2006 crystal ball, some of it coming true as we type.
Great overall list Jergen, thanks for compiling.

A great conversation starter. Thanks for the amazing legwork!
As someone who’s only read a small part of this total list, I am compelled to ask: are there really a hundred social media books worth reading? I don’t know, I’m just curious.
Again, thanks for the research and calculating. I suspect this is a good resource even if someone never ventures past the top 20 or 30.

Nice try… but I can’t take this list seriously with Twitter Power at #1 while cluetrain is at #40
WOW, this is extremely helpful to a newcomer to everything social media related. Looks like I have got a lot of reading to catch up on! It amazes me how you were able to put this list together. How long did it take?
An interesting list, but since publishing houses and marketers have worked out how to game things like Amazon and Good Reads (read large numbers of interns) – it has to be taken with a big ole hunk of salt- especially since most of these books are written by marketers themselves.
I am more likely to take recommendations from colleagues and friends on what is ‘the best book on social media’ than believe the ratings on either of these sites.
Heather – a good point. Yes, marketers can help to influence ratings and reviews. But I think Jurgen’s methodology adjusts for that.
For example, my book The New Rules of Marketing & PR has 168 reviews on Amazon. Do you think I manufactured all of those? Do you think that I gamed the BusinessWeek bestseller list 3 times this month?
David
All I am saying is that there is a reason that the New York Times closely guards how it works out its Best Seller List. I am sure BusinessWeek does the same.
I understand your point. The media lists like NYT and BizWeek are vetted using real sales data.
But I don’t think that people should dismiss reader generated reviews and ratings. If a potential purchaser acts a little like a detective, it is easy to see through the unscrupulous things.
David
Awesome list, thanks for taking the time to put it together.
I have two great new books in half-read state, Mitch Joel’s new book Six Pixels of Separation will hit the top 10 one day and Chris Brogan and Julien Smith’s Trust Agents is great so far (1 chapter read).

You can find out which of these books are in a library near you, through WorldCat, the world’s largest library catalog.
If someone at mellow billow would like to make a WorldCat list of all these books, we’d love to highlight them to librarians everywhere, so they can use your good selection work to promote them to their users.
I compiled a similar list 5 years ago…. it was a lot easier to do back then. I called it “The top 0 social media books, ever.”
I’d agree that cluetrain should be higher on the list, but again, its based on popularity and those that leave reviews or ratings. But thanks for the compilation! This will definetely help me diversify my library.
Maybe next you should ask for reviews on any of the 100 books and compile them as a follow up post.
Great list. Thanks, Jurgen, for taking the time.

[...] Comment! Do not expect to find any how-to’s or step-by-step tutorials on creating and executing your social media effort(s) in Here Comes Everybody: The Power Of Organizing Without Organizations by Clay Shirky, published in 2008. To increase the chance of success of your social media effort you need to understand how communities and online groups work, and what drives the members of these groups. This is exactly what you will learn in this book (position #5 in Jurgen’s list of Top 100 Best Social Media Books). [...]
A newer book that should be under consideration for the next round is Marketing 2.0: Bridging the Gap Between Buyer and Seller Through Social Media Marketing by Bernie Borges. Informative and excellent read!
